14 Cuban doctors end tour of duty

africa » gambia
Thursday, December 04, 2008
14 Cuban doctors who were in the country on a two year medical tour of duty have ended their term and will be going back to Cuba.

A farewell ceremony was organized for them yesterday, at the conference hall of the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, for the dedication and hard work they have shown during the course of their stay in The Gambia.

The fourteen doctors, according to officials, had served both at the medical school of the University of the Gambia and at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital. Speaking at the farewell ceremony, Professor Patrick Addy, chairman of the medical advisory committee, praised the doctors for their 2 years of services to the Gambian nation.

He said that the presence of the Cuban medical team in The Gambia had seen great achievement.

Professor Addy assured the departing Cubans that their efforts would never go un-remembered in The Gambian medical sector, urging them to be remembering the country when they are back in Cuba. Professor Addy seized the opportunity to hail President Jammeh for initiating such a strong relationship between The Gambia and Cuba.

Alfrere Geurerra Geonzalez, head of the Cuban medical team, also commended the Gambia government for its cooperation with the doctors during the course of the two years. He vowed that the long standing cordiality between the two countries would continue. He also thanked the doctors for their commitment during their stay, noting that they had demonstrated total sense of responsibility.

Babucarr Ngum, public relations officer at the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital, acknowledged that the 14 doctors had tirelessly served their mission to helping patients; saying that they have made history in The Gambian medical sector, something which would never go unnoticed by Gambians.
