Paramount Chief appointedTuesday, November 06, 2007 Alhaji Demba Sanyang, the Chief of Kombo North District has been appointed Paramount Chief of The Gambia. His appointment was approved by the Gambian leader, President Yahya Jammeh, in accordance with the powers vested in him, by Section 131 of the Local Government Act 2006. The Act also established a National Council of Chiefs. The National Council of Chiefs, according to reports, shall consist of all the Chiefs in The Gambia and shall be responsible for settling disputes. The Council will also deal with matters relating to the administration of justice and socio-cultural development and traditional matters. Notwithstanding, the Paramount Chief shall convene and host a meeting of the Council at least once in a year, at such time and place as he may determine. In an interview with the Daily Observer, Paramount Chief, Alhaji Demba Sanyang expressed his gratitude to President Jammeh for the trust bestowed on him, stating that he will live up to expectations.
