Family in court for assault

africa » gambia
Thursday, October 30, 2008

Four accused persons - Jarra Banora, Gunjur Jarju, Mama Jarju and Foday Jarju - all believed to be from the same family, were yesterday arraigned before Senior Magistrate Abdoulie Mbake of the Kanifing Magistrates Court on a charge of assault and causing actual bodily harm.

Jarra Banora (mother) and Gunjur Jarju (Father) are the parents of Mama Jarju and Foday Jarju.

When the case was called, Prosecutor 870 Touray told the court that he wanted to substitute the charge with a fresh charge.  There was no objection from the defense counsel, Sidney Riley.

The defense counsel told the court that he wanted to apply for a short adjournment to enable him to interview the 3rd and 4th accused (the children), as it was his first time to see them.

According to the new charge sheet, the quartet on September 9, 2008, at Old Jeshwang, jointly assaulted one Sally Senghore and caused her actual bodily harm.
All the four accused pleaded not guilty to the charge.

At that juncture, the senior magistrate granted the children, Mama Jarju and Foday Jarju, bail in the sum of D1000 each or a Gambian surety.

Their parents had earlier on been granted bail on the same condition.
The case was then adjourned to 13 November, 2008.
