Senegalo-Gambian football championship underway

africa » gambia » banjul
Wednesday, April 30, 2008
A football championship dubbed the Senegalo-Gambia football championship, which is  annually organised by the Senegalese Sport Committee in The Gambia, is currently underway at the Gambia Senior Secondary School ground in Banjul.

The championship which used to gather various Senegalese national teams in the country has now been expanded to include teams of Gambian, Guinean and Mauritanian nationals.

In the opening match, ASC Darou Salam FC defeated arch rivals All Star FC 2-1, while ASC Mauritania share spoils with ASC Deggo FC after nil-nil draw in another fixture.

In an interview our reporter, Ebou Faye, secretary general of Senegalese Sport Committee in the country, said the championship is meant to further cement the cordial relations that exist between the neighbouring nations. He said that plans are in the pipeline to make the championship a very big event which will attract different foreign nationals living in the country.

Faye noted that a cash price of D10,000 and giant trophy await the prospective winner, while the runners up will bag D8,000.  He said trophies will also be given to the Most Discipline Team, Best Player as well as the Leading Goal Scorer.

Secretary general Faye finally  heaped praises Chief of Defence Staff Major General Lang Tombong Tamba, NISA members and Samba Mbowe, president of the Senegalese community in The Gambia for their unprecedented support in ensuring that the tournament is successful.
