'Baby killer' remanded

africa » gambia
Wednesday, December 03, 2008
Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Brikama Magistrates Court last Tuesday remanded one Kumba Sowe of Pirang for allegedly murdering her two year old son, Jakariya Sowe.

According to the charge sheet, the accused on 30 November this year took her son to the river and drowned him. In a pre-trial session, the accused informed the court that she had the boy with one Sherriff Sowe but the man had rejected the boy. She said that her father had chased her away from their compound and that for the past two years, she had been staying with her uncle who died a few months ago.

According to her, after the death of her uncle, she had no place to stay and on that fateful day, she took the boy to the riverside to wash him with 'charms' but he fell into the river and died.

At that juncture, the presiding magistrate said he was going to adjourn the case so as to write to the master of the High Court to look for a lawyer to represent the accused. Inspector Samateh represented the IGP.
