Biko sink Hawks to go top

africa » gambia
Wednesday, March 18, 2009
Forward Assan Jatta's second half strike helped Steve Biko beat Hawks 1-0 yesterday to climb to the summit of the Gambia First Division League table for the first time.

The Bakau side went into the game on the back of the weekend's 2-0 win over Tallinding United, while stumbling Hawks were looking for their first win in four matches. The Biko side, who endured a deteriorating start to the season before becoming stronger in recent weeks, maintained their good run of form against an inconsistent side in Hawks.  A 58th minute goal from the former SK Lierse striker was all Steve Biko needed to leapfrog Armed Forces to the top of the table with 14 points.

In the day's other matches, Real de Banjul continue their good run of form under their new coach Pa Samba Mbenga with a hard fought 1-0 win over Sea View at the Father Gough complex in Manjai Kunda, while Gamtel and Africell-Sait Matty settled for a 1-1 draw at the Serrekunda East mini-stadium.

Champions Wallidan built on their weekend success over Brikama United to beat rivals, Samger, 2-1 at the Brikama mini-stadium to move further away from the red zone. Week eight matches will resume today with Armed Forces taking on Brikama United at the Manjai Kunda mini-stadium, while Tallinding United face Bakau United at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium.
