africa » gambia
Wednesday, November 26, 2008

Dodou Janneh, the person accused of murdering the late Sheriff Minteh during a police raid in London Corner last year, was on Tuesday sentenced to death after he was found guilty by the Bundung Magistrates Court presided over by Acting Principal Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara.

Dodou Janneh alias Dodou Boy - a volunteer of The Gambia Police Force attached to the Serrekunda Police Station had earlier on denied the charge.
The judgement was delivered in a crowded courtroom.

Lawyer Lamin Camara, who represented the convict (Dodou) told the court in his mitigation plea that the convict is a first time offender and had been remorseful as demonstrated during the duration of the trial.

According to him, Dodou Janneh is yet to marry but is the breadwinner of his extended family.
In handing over her judgement, the learned and erudite principal magistrate said the prosecution had brought 9 witnesses to back up his case while the defence had called two witnesses.
She said the offense committed by the convict is a heinous crime and needs to be discouraged. According to her the prosecution had proven its case beyond any reasonable doubt while noting that the evidence of the defence was weak and unreliable.
Magistrate Kumba Sillah-Camara then sentenced Dodou Janneh to death.
