GFA 1st Division League resumes today

africa » gambia
Tuesday, March 03, 2009
The week four fixtures of the Gambia First Division League will resume today with a flurry of derby fixtures across the various match venues.

Bakau United, who enjoyed a 1-0 derby win over Steve Biko before adding more icing on the cake with a massive 3-1 win over champions Wallidan will be hoping to uphold their good run of form when they take on neighbours, Sea View, at the Serrekunda East Mini-stadium.

Both sides share joint top position on the table with 7 points apiece, and the winner in this Bakau derby will be assured of the top spot for the next 24 hours. Another Bakau derby at the Brikama mini-stadium will pit Steve Biko against struggling Africell-Sait Matty. Steve Biko go into the game on the back of a first win against Brikama United in the mid-week and coach Abdoulie Bojang will be hoping for more of the same against the Sait Matty side who have collected only one point in three fixtures.

The day's final fixture, to be played at the Independence Stadium, will feature Real de Banjul and Hawks in a typical Banjul derby. Hawks won one, drew one and lost one in their first three games and they lie in mid-table with four points, but they are still better off than their neighbours and 2007 champions who could only manage a point in three matches.

Brikama United will play host to joint leaders Samger on  Thursday, while Wallidan, who have still not found their rhythm, face a tricky fixture against Gamtel. Both capital clubs  were heavily beaten in the week three fixtures, making their Thursday derby meeting at the Serrekunda East a must-win tie for either side. Armed Forces will be in action on the same day against Tallinding United at the Independence Stadium.
