Alhajie Abou Dandeh has finally stepped down as the president of the Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC), after serving at the helm for almost two decades.

The septuagenarian administrator admitted he has stayed at the top for a long while, adding that he will not seek reelection when the affiliated associations gather during the June 2009 general assembly to elect a new executive committee. He said the time has come for him to step down and give chance to competent and experienced persons to assume the responsibilities of managing the affairs of the organization that has an objective of serving as a collaborator in national sports development.

In a one-page statement dispatched to press yesterday at press briefing held at the Olympic House in Mile 7, Alhaji Dandeh said: "I wish to announce that I shall not offer myself as a candidate for election, in any capacity in the New Executive Bureau. I have served the GNOC in particular, as president for almost 20 years and Sports in the Gambia in general, for over 50 years." He added: "I believe the time has come for me to step aside and give opportunity to competent and experienced persons to assume the responsibilities of managing the affairs of our organization."

"In consultation and agreement with members of my family, this decision was made over two years ago and informally conveyed to some members of our organization. I am today confirming that decision and commitment. It has been an honour and privilege to serve the Gambian nation in the capacity of president of the GNOC." "I wish to seize this opportunity to thank the current and past members of the Executive Bureau, the committee and staff for their dedication to service, commitment to duty and loyalty to the affairs of the GNOC."

Alhaji AB Njie was elected as the president of the GNOC in 1989, replacing the committee's first president, Alhaji Omar Sey.
