Africa and the political crises

Editorial

It in now several decades since most of Africa freed itself from the chain of colonialism. The objective of our liberation was not merely to let go the imperialists, but also to erect a political structure that can administrate the affairs of the people in a manner that will not only generate progress, peace and prosperity but also bring about development.

Unfortunately, the objective of our liberation struggle still remains an illusion for the most part. Africa, from independence, continues to portray a society marred by political turbulence. Observers, however, continue to be divided as to why his is so. While some argued that this is as a result of distraction of our indigenous political system, others cast blame on our politicians for their failure to provide a tangible sense of direction for the continent.

Whatever the case may be, it is important to understand that Africa belongs to Africans; period. And at a time as crucial as this, when world politics is going through myriads of changes, it is important to note that it is only the African, and not anyone else, that can develop the continent.

Honour and pride can only be achieved through the fulfilment of the need and aspirations of the people and not by being traitors and obsessed with want for control of state power. All Africa needs are political leaders that emerge as a result of their understanding of the needs and aspiration of its people. And one thing quite important to emphasise is that development can never be achieved in the absence of peace and tranquillity. It is time that Africa take to distancing itself from the unnecessary crises that engulf our political circuit.

Africa is endowed with ample necessary resources and manpower for its development. Political will and commitment is therefore needed to channel our growth. It is indeed a necessity to have politicians in the likes of President Jammeh, who has not only provided a system of governance that allows equal participation in the running of the affairs of the state from all sectors of society, but also he has endeavoured to ensure clear sense of direction, permitting the continuation of a development pattern that will make maximum utilisation of indigenous mechanisms, free from alien influence. Surly, with such a crop of leadership, political and other crises will become history.
