Sunwing Craft Market fundraising: a resounding success

africa » gambia
Thursday, February 12, 2009
The fundraising event organised in honour of the Sunwing Craft Market Association, has raised the sum of D30, 000 (Thirty thousand dalasis) at a kora show on 1st February 2009.

The event, which was held at Bass Bendula Bar & Restaurant in Cape Point, brought together both holiday makers and residents of Bakau and Cape Point, who were thrilled by the Gambia's kora maestro, Jaliba Kuyateh and the Kumareh Band. The sum raised was yesterday handed over to Pa Jallow on behalf of the association's president, Ya Awa Jah.  The funds will supplement member's electricity bill, security of the market and other expenses.

The fundraising event is the brainchild of Basirou Bojang, who is the honorary father of the association, and the proprietor of Bass Bendula Bar & Restaurant - a popular eatery in Cape Point. According to Basirou Bojang, the fund raising is one way to contribute significantly to the social enhancement of the people. "If the members utilise the money effectively, I hope there wouldn't be any disruption to their electricity supply. I will continue to support you in any way possible, to see that some basic amenities are in place at the craft market.

Mr Bojang then used the to call for unity among members for a peaceful co-existence". He commended all their sponsors in particular, Ebrima Bojang, and the holiday makers that have patronise them to the success of the event. He also apologised to neighbours for the sound disturbance in that night noting that, all was geared towards contributing his quota to national development.

The four-hour kora performance by Jalika Kuyateh was largely graced by holiday makers from the three hotels in Cape Point - Ocean Bay, Cape Point Hotel and Sunbeach,  who dine and wine as the night of fun and enjoyment progresses. For them it was another Gambia experience. It could recalled that, Sunwing Craft Market has over the years, being supported both in cash and kind by Mr Bojang, to uplift the status of the area, which he attributed to his contribution to the development of tourism in The Gambia.
