The Judiciary in the spotlight

Editorial,

An effective and efficient judiciary for the dispensation of justice is fundamental in a free and democratic society.

As an institution through which the state administers justice,it is crucial in the maintenance of peace and progress in our society. The more the judiciary stands in the defence of justice, the better the people will conduct themselves and direct their actions towards society's advancement, because they will have the faith of the system.

It is on the pillars of equal rights, justice, accountability and transparency that the July 22nd Revolution was built.  Since from the early stages of the Revolution to date, there is ample evidence that the actions of our status quo has not in anyway departed from this stand point.

It is therefore no wonder that our recent reports featured President Jammeh reiterating his call for the effective dispensation of justice in the country so as to permit the rule of law to flourish.  This has again  manifested that President Jammeh is still committed to the ideologies that brought him to power, which are equal rights and justice among the citizenry, and accountability and transparency on the part of those who control and manage public.

This is what is expected form African leaders particularly in this time that we are warming up for unity.  It is on justice that the walls of a United Africa can be built.  The call of the President for an effective dispensation of justice has in fact come at a much better time.  A time that recalcitrant elements of society are corrupting our hospitality and stability. That is to say , acts of criminality are increasing and it is only the judiciary that can correct such acts by beating culprits with the stick of justice.

The task then lies in the hands of the judiciary.  The institution should realize that all eyes are on it,  as it endeavours to correct social wrongs.  Effective dispensation of justice, where speedy and impartial trials characterize our criminal justice system will earn greater public confidence and respect for the institutions.

We are optimistic that President Jammeh will give the institution all the necessary support and as the saying goes 'he who gives you much expects much from you'.  The institution must continue to jealously safeguard justice for the interest of the nation as a whole.  This is the ambition of the president and we must amalgamate to produce it.
