1 killed, 3 injured in Jiboroh building collapse

Africa » Gambia
Monday, July 06, 2009
A seven-year-old boy was killed and three others sustained serious injuries after an abandoned and dilapidated building collapsed on them last Thursday evening in Jiboroh, Kombo East.

According to sources, the four victims were playing in the house when part of it fell on them. At the time of going to press, the body of the deceased child was taken to the Brikama Health Centre by the Jiboroh Police and was later referred to the Brikama police station, before he would be rushed to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) for a post mortem. Meanwhile, no other dead is being confirmed yet, but sources concluded that the three other victims are currently at the RVTH for treatment.

Community concern
Majority of the people who were at the Brikama police station at the time the dead body arrived, some how blamed people who abandoned their buildings with no body occupying them. Some have even suggested that actions be taken on  owners of such buildings as children normally do not have the instinct to identify where they should play and where not to.
