Britons give prayer mats

africa » gambia
Tuesday, October 30, 2007

A group of British nationals, on Friday distributed a consignment of praying mats to four mosques in the Lower and Upper Niumi constituencies in North Bank Region, at a presentation ceremonies held at various villages.

The villages which benefitted from the assistance were Albreda, Nema Kunku, Al-Jamdou and Amadalai.

The mats were provided by Ayub Vohra, Yusuf Vohra,Yakub Bhai, Zohra Sheikh, Doodhwala, and Molvi, as well as the families from various cities in the United Kingdom and were presented on behalf of the group by Khan, Fatma, Dalal and Sallow.

Rashid Sallow, a member of the philanthropist group, emphasised the need for Muslims to share with those who are most in need of help. Mr Sallow thanked the donors for assisting the poor and the needy in order to enable them to meet certain condition in life.

Receiving seven bales of prayer mats, Kebba Sari Jaiteh, thanked the donors for rendering support to the mosques, describing it as a step in the right direction.

Receiving four bales in Amadalai, Muhammed Lamin Kah, deputy Imam of Amdalai, said the donation will go a long way in resolving the shortage of prayer mats in the mosque, considering the fact that Muslims from the satellite villages perform their Friday prayers at the mosques.

He then urged the donor community to assist them with electricity in the mosque, the lack of which has rendered the fans installed at the mosque unfunctional.
At Nema Kunku and Aljamdou villages, four bales of mats were presented to each community.
