2007 Zone II Championship:Gambia handed tough draw

africa » gambia
Monday, November 12, 2007

The draw for the forthcoming Zone II football championship was held on Saturday, November 10, in Bissau.

The draw which was attended by  representatives of the eight participating nations, saw the Gambia Scorpions paired in Group B alongside the defending champions, Guinea Conakry, Mali and Cape Verde. The Scorpions' group has been considered by many pundits, as the Group-of-Death in the face of Group A, which features the host nation, Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Mauritania and the six-time winners, Senegal.

The biannual championship for the West African nations, will kick off from November 30 to December 10, 2007. The Gambia was represented at the mouth-watering draw by the former Director of Youth and Sports, who now serves as Gambian Ambassador to Guinea Bissau, Mr Cherno Barra Touray.

The Gambian team to the Bissau tournament will include only home-based players, as Scorpions still eye their first-ever Zone II Cup since the inception of the championship decades back.
