OperAfrica, a charity organisation based in Hampshire and registered in The Gambia in April, have committed themselves to helping Gambian women in the area of agriculture and health.

Since they started operations in The Gambia, OperAfrica have made a great difference to the lives of hundreds of women in Madina Salam and Berending in Kombo South, Western Region.

In an interview with the Daily Observer, Janice Cairns, co-founder of OperAfrica, said their visit to The Gambia many years ago accorded them the opportnuity to get first-hand information on the need to help Gambian women in the areas of agriculture and health.

"We first signed an MoU in agriculture and then dug wells in Madina Salam for the women's garden project, to empower them to feed themselves. About 500 women are benefiting from the garden project in the area. We also signed an MoU in health and last year, we collaborated with Sight Savers and OperAfrica to finance operations on 40 cataract patients," she said.

The group, which includes Paul Stafford, Jude Stafford and their Country Coordinator, Faburama Darboe, a native of Gunjur, on Saturday, conducted another round of operations on about 40 cataract patients at the Gunjur Health Centre, in collaboration with Sight Savers International.

Country Coordinator Faburama Darboe, said that although his organisation is young, it would go all out to achieve its aims and objectives.
