Sufi Imam to visit GambiaMonday, November 12, 2007 Mawlana Sheikh Nazim Al-Haqani Halifa, leader of the worldwide Sufi sect, has sent Sheikh Abdul Hamid Butt, Imam of the London Mosque to The Gambia, on a week-long visit, according to reports from the Naqshibandi Zkir Group in The Gambia. Imam Butt will arrive in the country tomorrow, November 13. Sheikh Lamin Mendy, representative of Tariquat in The Gambia, told the Daily Observer that the Imam will give an interview at the City Limits Radio on Thursday. "There will also be a grand Zkir (remembrance of Allah), which will be led by a Sufi Master and author of the book: 'Izra wal Mirage of the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH)', at the Bakau New Town Grand Mosque (around the junction leading to Mile 7) at 08:00 pm. This will take place on Thursday," he said.
Sheikh Mendy observed that the Muslim Ummah is expected to learn more about Sufism, which is not well understood by some people in the country.
He then delved into the allegories of Sufism.
Omar was living in a hut like any other person. The ambassador was surprised to the point that he was frightened, when he found Omar lying on his back on the ground, with his face as radiant as the moon. He was taught that the best and everlasting palace can only be built in one's heart. Omar conquered the material world with spiritualism. This is Sufism," he narrated.
Sheikh expressed delight with the visit of the Imam, noting that this aims to propagate the traditions of Islam. He then stated his willingness to provide further information on any enquiries.
