KMC, BCC dissolved

africa » gambia
Friday, November 02, 2007

The Councils for the Kanifing Municipality and Banjul were yesterday dissolved, the Daily Observer can reveal.

This development comes, barely a day after the amendment of the Local Government Bill 2007, by Members of the National Assembly, which empowered the President to dissolve Councils 90 days, prior to the Local Government elections and the setting up of an Interim Management Team, who will oversee the affairs of the Councils until such a time that the scheduled elections will be held.

Meanwhile, Alieu Mboge has been appointed as Chairman of the Interim Management Committee for the Banjul City Council and Gibou Jagne, as Chairman of the Interim Management Committee for Kanifing Municipal Council.

Alieu Mboge has served between 1972 to 1978 as Director of Finance and Deputy Managing Director, respectively at the Gambia Ports Authority.

He was then appointed Managing Director, at the Social Security and Housing Finance Corporation from 1978 to 1980. He later served as Managing Director of the then National Trading Corporation (NTC) from 1980 to 1990.

He retired in 1993 and then started to operate his own business until his new appointment.

Earlier, Mr Mboge served as Chairman of the Board of Directors of the GPA, Senegambia and Kairaba Beach Hotels, respectively.

When contacted, both Mam Sai Njie-Sanneh, acting Mayoress of Banjul and Yankuba Colley, acting Mayor of KMC confirmed the veracity of the story.

Efforts to reach Gibou Jagne, Chairman of the Interim Management Committee at KMC prove futile.
