Gambia to name Zone II squad

africa » gambia
Thursday, November 08, 2007

Scorpions head coach, Spaniard Jose Martnez, is set to name the final list of a 22-man squad for the forthcoming Zone II Championship scheduled to take place in Guinea Bissau.

The eight-nation bi-annual tournament which was earlier scheduled to start from November 22 to December 4, will now start on November 30 and end on December 4, 2007 in the former Portuguese colony. The postponement was effected to allow the host country to complete construction works on her FIFA sponsored artificial turf which will be the grounds for the matches.

Reports reaching Observer Sports desk have revealed that Spaniard Jose Martenez will name his final list from the pool of home-based invitees on Friday, November 9, at the Independence Stadium, Bakau.

"The coach had earlier planned to name his final list last Tuesday, but he later shifted it to Friday, November 9. We have a pool of home-based players to choose from, thus the coach's options are very wide. I have no doubt that he will team-up a formidable squad at the end of the day," a member of the technical staff told Observer Sports yesterday.

The draw for the regional tournament for West African nations will take place on Saturday, November 10, where the eight participating nations which include The Gambia, Mauritania, Guinea Conakry, Sierra Leone, Cape Verde, Senegal, Mali and host Guinea Bissau, will be grouped into two groups of four.

The Scorpions have never won the Zone II championship since its inception, but have reached the finals twice -  1958 and 1980 - and have lost both finals to neighbouring Senegal who have won the championship a record 8 times. Guinea Conakry are the second record holders, having won it 5 times.
