Tourists laud The GambiaWednesday, December 12, 2007 Tourism, the country's second largest foreign exchange earner, contributes greatly to the country's economic growth, offering job opportunities for many Gambian youths. Recent years have seen a sharp increase in the number of tourists visiting the country due to multiple factors. The Gambia's hospility, peace and stability are the attractive forces for visit by many tourists. Clive Day and his spouse, Susan Day, who are British couple, acclaimed the hopsitality of Gambian people. Their love for the country is apparently deep-rooted as they had visited the country twice. They have pledged to spend a good part of their holiday life in The Gambia with their families and promised to encourage friends to visit the country. Having travelled to many countries, they feel that The Gambia is one of the safest destinations for tourists. Margaret Ann Riley and Sandara Brant, another British couple, who are now based in The Gambia, gave their own account. According to them, they came to The Gambia as tourists, but admiration for the weather, diverse culture and the friendliness of people motivated them to stay. Margaret, who was beaming with love for The Gambia, disclosed that she is now a Muslim and thanked the government for providing a peaceful and conducive environment. "The Gambia is a country which tourists can visit freely without fear of intimidation or harassment," they noted. Mandy, a British lady, who complimented the tourist security personnel for their role in the industry, said the menace of 'bumsterism' has relatively decreased. Ali Baba Pizza, the manager and proprietor of Ali Paba Restaurant in Senegambia. Which is one of the oldest restaurants in the tourism industry, thanked the government, the Gambia Tourism Authority and the Tourist Security Unit, for giving tourists the confidence to visit The Gambia, as well as for the rapid infrastructural improvement.
