CAF slams US$10,000 fine on Gambia -suspends three key players

Wednesday, December 05, 2007
The disciplinary committee of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has slammed a US$10,000 (ten thousand US dollar) fine on Gambia for the crowd trouble that ensued during Scorpions' 2008 Nations Cup qualifier home match against Algeria in September, Observer Sports can reveal.

The disciplinary committee has also handed out a two-match suspension to three Gambian players namely: Lamin Conateh, Abdoulie Corr, commonly known as Paco and the Belgian based-striker, Assan Jatta for their involvement in the fracas that marred the end of the match, in which Scorpions inflicted a stinging 2-1 defeat on the Northerners.

Reacting to the continental body's decision, the Gambia Football Association has appealed to the general public, more especially the supporters, to comport themselves during future international matches to avoid such heavy fines.

A press release issued by the football association said: "As we prepare for the World Cup and African Nations Cup qualification rounds, and other CAF sanctioned football competitions for the year 2008, we would like to sincerely appeal to the general public especially the fans, to comport themselves during and after matches to avoid future sanctions from Confederation of African Football (CAF)."

The Gambia have been paired in Group 6 along arch rivals, Senegal, Liberia and Algeria in the 2010 World Cup qualifying round that also doubles as qualifiers for the 2010 Nations Cup finals in Angola.

Gambia's fixtures against both Senegal and  Algeria will be no ordinary matches with the trio having bitter experiences in their previous meetings.
