Editor,

I am elated by news of the discovery of some strategic minerals in The Gambia. Indeed, this means a lot to our development aspirations. It goes to confirm that Allah is by our side, and that He sympathises with our course, given our relentless efforts in bettering the lot of the mass.

Moreover, I would like to elaborate on a few more issues. In records, the most disturbed countries, in terms of civil unrest, have been countries endowed with mineral resources like these. It is either because the locals feel exploited and cheated, as we often hear in the troubled Nigerian Niger Delta region, or they are actually totally sidelined. In either case, the benefit of whatever is being reaped from the God-given wealth is realised by total strangers.

I also believe that The Gambia, having been known for its relative peace, will no doubt serve as a better example for other countries with similar endowment. But I also want to stress that there should be no room for complacence. Therefore, I call on the authorities to maintain the momentum in their effort in maintaining the peace and security this country is known for.

I want to take this opportunity to laud the president of the Republic, Alhagie Dr Yahya Jammeh, for his style of governance. As Gambians, we are obliged to offer the president all the support he needs, by rallying behind him through thick and thin. I pray that by the blessing of 'Yumul Ashura', the eve of which this wonderful revelation was done, The Gambia and Gambians will realise the full benefit of these discoveries.
