"Girls Education is our priority"

Wednesday, January 09, 2008
A UK philanthropist couple has said that girls' education in the Gambia is their principal priority in the dispensation of their charitable activities. For that reason, the couple said if one educates a girl; it represents the education of the whole nation. Nolan Lincoln and his wife Nikki make these remarks after distributing thousands of Dalasis worth of educational materials to schools throughout the country.

The Lincoln family from Suffolk said the objective of the charity is to contribute immensely to the improvement of girls' education, their health, and their living standard. Explaining how they get their funding, they said they work very hard in the UK.

"We organize hot buffets of Gambian dishes in the UK and the income generated is used to purchase educational and health materials, mosquito bed nets among sets of materials given out to schools and communities.

We were able to make such huge donations and contributions due to incomes generated from sales from our saloon in the UK and from other philanthropists who donated different items to the charity for Gambians. Also, with the money raised, we pay school and exams fees; provide lunch and uniforms among other expenses incurred in ones education," they explained. The Lincoln family disclosed that even their 15-year old son, Mitchell is actively involved in the fundraising.

According to the couple, they motivate friends and relatives to join their fundraising activities by organizing raffles for them and in doing so, more people attend buffets and other activities helping the charity.

Commenting on the history of the charity, Nikki said she first came to the Gambia with her late mother in 1999, and later convinced her husband Nolan to make the Gambia their only tourist destiny in order to build a charity to help Gambian girls and their local communities in the areas of health, education and other technical areas.
