Presidential assistance for exemplary farmer

africa » gambia
Monday, October 27, 2008
In yet another benevolent move by The Gambian leader, President Alhagie Dr Yahya Jammeh has pledged to assist Hamedou Jah, a young farmer based in Basse, Upper River Region, with a water pump system covering a land area of seven (7) kilometres.

The Gambian leader made this pledge last Friday, as he received a donation of an assorted household materials, valued at D76,000, from Hamedou Jah, who is also a business tycoon.

The donated items, which are earmarked for Kanilai Farms, comprise 100 buckets, each with a capacity of 100 litres of water; 1500 cups and 100 basins.

Reacting to the gesture, President Jammeh hailed the donor for his commitment to the cause of farming, reiterating that his clarion call for the people to go back to the land was for the benefit of the whole country. He described the young farmer as a patriotic and exemplary young man whose footsteps should be followed.

The Gambian leader went on to urge young people to invest whatever money they had into meaningful ventures rather than paying their way to Spain by canoe through the deadly seas.

While noting that Hamedou Jah was the first young Gambian at his level to have given him assistance, President Jammeh assured his young benefactor that his doors were always open for him anytime the need arise.

For his part, Momodou S Kah, the deputy governor of Upper River Region (URR), who accompanied the donor to State House, expressed the young farmer's love for President Jammeh, adding that the young philanthropist appreciates the untiring effort of President Jammeh. Deputy Governor Kah informed the president that the donor's exemplary farming activities in his region were remarkable.

Modou Cham, an APRC supporter, told the president that despite the farming activities of the donor, he was also engaged in business ventures, adding that Mr Jah was currently running 20 petrol stations in the country, and that he had been complementing government's efforts in empowering women and youths in the Upper River Region.
