Kukoi's accomplice in the dock

Thursday, October 09, 2008

Salifu Jawo, an accomplice to the 1981 attempted coup of Kukoi Samba Sanyang in The Gambia, was yesterday arraigned before Magistrate Pa Harry Jammeh of the Brikama Magistrates Court charged with being in possession of 8 life rounds of ammunition and 9 millimetre Mab pistol, contrary to Section 8 of the Fire Arms Act, Cap 10 Volume Three, Laws of The Gambia.

Mr Jawo was arrested on October 3 in his Lamin residence after a thorough search conducted by the Gambia Police Force of his house.

When the charge sheet was read to him, Mr Jawo pleaded guilty. He said the ammunition in question  was given to him by Kukoi Samba Sanyang, who, he said, he had fought for during the 1981 foiled coup. He further told the court that he could have taken those ammunition out of his house a long time ago but had forgotten all about them.

Magistrate Jammeh ordered for the accused to be remanded at the State Central Prison and to appear before him on October 15. He also ordered the police to further conduct a search of the accused person's house. Police Prosecutor 1179 B Camara represented the IGP.
