New acting CEO for Gamtel / Gamcel

africa » gambia
Monday, November 17, 2008

Reports reaching the Daily Observer have revealed that Phoday Sisay has been appointed the new acting chief executive officer of the Gambia Telecommunications Company (Gamtel) and the Gambia Cellular GSM Company (Gamcel).

Mr Sisay's appointment comes on the heels of the recent termination of the partnership between The Gambia government and Spectrum International Holding.

Contacted on the development, Phoday Sisay confirmed the story, adding that he received his appointment letter last Tuesday, the 11th of November 2008. He once served as the deputy managing director of Gamtel during the tenure of Omar Ndow, a former managing director of the said company.

He was also deployed to Gamcel as a general manager before his services were terminated by the Spectrum International Holding soon after they commenced operations under the partnership agreement.

The partnership agreement between the government and Spectrum was terminated due to what the  government described as "fundamental breaches of the provisions of the partnership agreement."
