Nyaama on coartem sensitisation campaign

africa » gambia
Thursday, February 07, 2008
Following the introduction of the new drug of choice for the treatment of malaria (coartem), Niamina Youth Association against malaria (NYAAMA) recently mounted a sensitisation in seven communities in the district on the new drug and its usage.

At the start of the sensitisation campaign, Musa Camara, a representative from the regional health team said that the change of treatment from chloroquine to coartem came as a result of multiple resistances to chloroquine, exceeding levels recommended by WHO. Mr Camara called for sound environmental management in order to significantly reduce the incidence of malaria.

The president of the association, Kemo Wally, called on participants to spread the message to the community accurately . He commended the National Malaria Control Programme for sponsoring their sensitisation campaign .

The Nurse incharge of Kudang health centre, Mr Fabakary Njie, spoke on the  dosage of the new drug (coartem) for the treatment of malaria.

The chief of the District, Alhagie Kebba Touray, called on members to take ownership of NYAAMA, and further urged them to unite and cooperate in order to achieve their goals. He spoke at length on the important role the organisation have played in increasing awareness on the new drug for malaria treatment.
