Charles Jaw Memorial Academy boostedWednesday, April 23, 2008 Mereway Community College on Northampton, United Kingdom, on Monday April 21st, donated educational materials and a cash amount of thirty thousand dalasis (D30,000) to Charles Jaw Memorial Academy School, at a presentation ceremony held at the school's assembly ground in Bundung. The money donated will help to build a standard canteen for the students in the school. Presenting the items, Janet Florey, deputy head teacher at Mereway Community College, expressed her college's willingness to associate themselves with Charles Jaw Memorial. According to her, the gesture culminated proceed from a fundraising initiative organised by her college in the UK. "We were not sure what actually the school will need and that's why we raise this small amount of money for the time being," she said. She also noted that they will sit and discuss with Charles Jaw administrators for possible areas of intervention, adding they will embark on fundraising activities so as to meet the demand of the school. Receiving the donation on behalf of the school, Yankuba Colley, Lord Mayor of the Kanifing Municipal Council, hailed the donors for such a laudable move, describing them as genuine philanthropists. He called on them to further assist the school in the possible areas of improvement, noting that his municipal council which established the school cannot meet all the necessary demand at the school. Speaking earlier, Alpha Khan, principal of the school, said the gesture is a fulfilment of pledges made by the community college when they first visited the school a week ago. Khan informed the community college visitors that his school was established by the Kanifing Municipal Council (KMC) in 1997, as a test case of local government intervention on the country's educational sector. "In the past ten years, the school has grown from strength to strength and made tremendous progress. Beginning with only 270 students and 16 teachers, the school can today boost of 1333 pupils of which 699 are girls," he explained. Khan commended the college for choosing his school for assistance noting that the gesture will go a long way on boosting the educational system of the school. Ousman Ndow, chairman of the board of governors of the school, echoed similar sentiments.Jatto Suno and Alieu Bayo of the official tourist guide who mediate the relationship between the two schools, said this link at Charles Jaw is among a host of other links that the official tourist guide have done in the country since their inception.
