Tourisphere - Let's go fishing

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, April 23, 2008
Some tourists has developed their scope and style of enjoyment outside traditional activities, like training and seminars without relaxation during their visit into the country, and switch on to a wide range of new activities such as cultural, adventure, sports and leisure activities.

Tourists to The Gambia continue enjoying their holidays in the various resorts with different sports activities such as playing tennis, football, swimming, cycling, among other activities. It was on Thursday morning in the week last, Tourisphere spotted one among the tourists, Eric Livermore, who was accommodated by Sun Beach hotel, with his fishing rod, he was ready for fishing at the beach side.

Eric Livermore who started visiting the Gambia since year 2002 said he has visited the country about 28 times to date. He often comes alone until his last five trips when he started coming with his family this was due to the fact that "The Gambia is a peaceful nation that restores your faith in human relationships and makes you look at your life values," he said.

"I like fishing for relaxation instead of lying on sun bed or swimming all day," he said with fascination. Eric like going for fishing on boat but he as well like using fishing rod at the beach side. At his hotel's beach there are different types of fish available such as 'snapa', butter fish, angel fish, black proper, stingray, frond fish, captain fish and a lot of them.

According to Eric and his tour guide, Bakare Jatta alias Baks, high tight period is the best time for fishing. At that time more fish comes out because there is more water. Eric Livermore said fishing is very good in the Gambia because there are lots of fish here compare to UK, his country. One man meat is another man poison, Eric's wife and son does not like fishing instead they like music. "My wife is a retired fitness training teacher and she likes music so much. Our son like music as well, he plays guitar and other instruments with the musician in the bar."

"Hey Baks, check the fishing rod, is shaking!" he alerted the tour guide. The fishing rod has caught a big butter fish. He removed the hook from the fish mouth and set the rod for another one. Eric wants more development for the beaches and the Gambia tourism industries as well in order to attract more tourists to the country.

He will like to see beaches in the country competing with Tenerefe Canary Island in Spain, whereby at the beach side, sun bed is lying side by side "although in culture the two countries are different and they are more orientated.

But I like Gambia because it is not cloudy but always it is sunshine," Eric noted. He preferred English dishes to Gambian dishes but he quickly added that "Gambian people are friendly."
