Antouman Gaye, a senior Gambian lawyer, has taken over the the criminal case involving an escapee from a US prison. Christopher Badjie, said to have five different names, is facing 22 charges, including impersonation.

Defence counsel Gaye took over the case from lawyer Edu Gomez, who had expressed  his intention of withdrawal, when the proceedings resumed on Wednesday at the Banjul Magistrates Court.

Buba Bojang, a legal counsel, also announced his representation for the state, but added that he was not prepared to proceed with the case due to a seminar of magistrates at the High Court; as a result of which the prosecution witness was told not to appear in court. The state counsel then applied for an adjournment of the case.

Defence counsel Gaye raised no objection to this submission, but was quick to remind the state counsel about the need for a speedy trial, noting that his client was being tried on 22 counts of criminal offence. In essence, he said, it is important for the accused to know his fate.

Antouman Gaye further suggested to the court to schedule a daily or regular hearing of the case, considering the number of counts involved.

Presiding principal magistrate BY Camara, assured the court of his readiness to have a speedy trial, pointing to the just ended 9 MFDC rebels case, which was heard about three times in a week. He then adjourned the case to May 13 for continuation of the proceedings.
