Principal magistrate BY Camara of the Banjul Magistrates Court and  Moses Richards, a former principal magistrate at the Kanifing Magistrates Court, have been appointed judges of the High Court of The Gambia with effect from July 1, the Daily Observer can reveal.

Justice Camara was a former master of the High Court in Banjul. But Moses Richards has since left the country to pursue a masters degree programme in law in UK and it is not clear when he would complete his studies.

Reliable sources told the Daily Observer Mr Haruna Jaiteh, the acting judicial secretary, has been finally appointed judicial secretary of The Gambia effective on June 1.

Confirming this developments in the country's justiciary, the newly appointed judiciary secretary  Jaiteh, said the appointment of the two principal magistrates to the bench is in line with the government's desire to elevate Gambians to key judicial positions.

"The Government wants Gambians to take ownership of the judiciary", said Mr Jaiteh.

The judicial secretary described the two newly judges as "men of wisdom" in law.

The newly appointed judicial secretary joined The Gambia Judiciary as a clerk and has since rose through several ranks before landing in his present capacity. Mr Jaiteh studied management at various local and international institutions.
