Difficult ties await Wallidan -As league reaches crucial stage

africa » gambia
Thursday, June 26, 2008
The battles for the GFA division one league title and final relegation spot take centre stage in the coming weeks. Wallidan must win their remaining three matches to stand any chance of winning their first league title in four years, and the Blue Boys know vividly that the remaining matches are no easy ties.

Wallidan, who currently lead the table by three points, will face Bakau United next, on Monday, the easiest tie among their remaining fixtures.

Fellow contenders, Samger and Hawks ,who are tied at second position on 32 points, both await Wallidan in the final two matches with either sides needing the maximum points to claim the crown.

Wallidan will face Samger on July 6, before taking on Hawks in the final match that is expected to decide the fate of the crown.

The league's defending champions, Real de Banjul, who currently lie at fourth position with 27 points, are all but mathematically out of the contention. Despite being ruled out, however, Real de Banjul, will not sit back when they take on Samger on Monday.

While all eyes will be focussed on the clash of the contenders in the coming weekend, fans will also be monitoring the relegation zone, where Interior, Bakau United and FA Cup champions Ports Authority all have their fate lingering in the limbo.

After their fixture against leaders on Monday, Bakau United will face fellow strugglers Interior and Sait Matty-Africell in the final two matches, while Ports Authority will meet Steve Biko, Armed Forces and Gamtel.
