Stop the rape now!

africa » gambia
Thursday, July 17, 2008
Editor,

Please, allow me space to express my concern with the increasing rate of rape cases in this peaceful country of ours. Rape itself is criminal, but what makes the current trend all the more disturbing is the age of the victims. We must not allow anybody to disturb the culture of peace and security we have all along been enjoying. I therefore wholeheartedly agree with the police boss' assertion that there shouldn't be any bail for rapists.

Gambians should begin to get used to the fact that criminals do not deserve the treatment usually reserved for humble people. Rape is not just a crime, it is a serious crime. Allowing bail for rapists is some kind of an incentive for prospective offenders.  Our laws are suitably in place to take care of such madness, we ought to make use of them.
