Child trafficker gets two years

Wednesday, July 02, 2008
Principal Magistrate BY Camara of the Banjul Magistrates Court, yesterday, convicted and sentenced one Sheikh Jobe to two years imprisonment, with hard labour, after he was found guilty of child trafficking.

In what could be viewed as his last judgment in a case at the magistrates court, following his suspended appointment as a judge, which finally takes effect today, July 1, the principal magistrate said the prosecution has proven its case beyond reasonable doubt.

He said the prosecution has called three witnesses in the three-and-half month long trial, including the mother of the child.

In his plea for mitigation, Mr Jobe urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

According to the prosecution, Sheikh Jobe, on 2nd April, 200, at Wharfi Njaggo in Banjul, stole two children in the persons of Telma Bangura and Mariama Jallow, by enticing them with biscuits, and then took custody of the children, thereby committing an offence.
