Nutrition agency dialogue lunch tomorrow

africa » gambia
Monday, August 18, 2008

The National Nutritional Agency supported by UNICEF, and hosted by Africell and Sheraton Hotel will organise a private sector dialogue and working lunch as part of the Breastfeeding Week, under the series of steps mapped out in the Call to Action document on Child Survival in The Gambia. The event, according to a UNICEF media advisory, is scheduled for tomorrow at Sheraton Hotel in Brufut at 12 pm.

World Breastfeeding Week was first celebrated in 1992 and is now observed in over 120 countries by UNICEF and its partners, including the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action and the World Health Organisation.

In May 2008, a cross-section of Gambian society committed to the Call to Action was anchored by the 4 Quick Wins for Children.
The 4 Wins are: hand washing with soap and water, use of insecticide treated nets, oral re-hydration treatment, and exclusive breastfeeding.

The four quick wins will ensure that more children will survive due to stronger advocacy, greater financial commitments, and stronger political will in all key areas of society. In this context, continued breastfeeding after six months, for up to two years of age or beyond, combined with safe and appropriate complementary feeding, is the optimal approach to child feeding.
