GU gives mosquito bed nets to Mandinaring village

africa » gambia
Wednesday, August 06, 2008
As part of the activities marking its second year anniversary, Global Unification-The Gambia,in conjunction with its partner organization (STOP MALARIA)  in Spain, presented insecticide treated bed nets, worth of over twelve thousand dalasi, to the village of Mandinaring. Funds for the bed nets were brought in by two members of the Spanish malaria campaign group, from Spain.

In delivering the bed nets to the women of Mandinaring village, Mr. Ebrima S. Dem, the national representative of Global Unification - The Gambia, thanked the women for their welcoming reception. He expressed  delight on behalf of his association and their partners, for giving them the opportunity to work with the people of Mandinaring in the continued fight against Malaria in the region.

He disclosed that the bed nets are of high quality and they had been already  treated with harmless insecticide, adding that the nets did not require further dipping for at least  six months. Mr Dem added that Global Unification -The Gambia, being a research and development association, had special interest in the country's health sector and that it feels obliged to contribute  its quota in complimenting government's efforts to ensure a healthy society in The Gambia.

He informed the gathering that malaria is still a major health problem in the country, and that it requires the concerted efforts of all and sundry.

The GU national representative went on to say that apart from the provision of bed nets, the project would also take into account other cost effective mechanisms in combating malaria, such as training and sensitisations. These, he assured them, would improve the capacities of local communities in malaria prevention and treatment.

Speaking on behalf of the team in Spain, Mr. Iago Vasquet thanked the entire community of Mandinaring for the warm welcome accorded to them. He expressed his personal appreciation to Global Unification for spearheading the project in the service of the local community.

He narrated that malaria was once a major disease in the region where he hailed from in Spain. However, he indicated that due to collective action and genuine commitment, the disease was eventually eradicated. He underscored that a similar holistic approach could be applied in The Gambia to enhance the country's  continued fight against the disease.

He assured the community of Mandinaring and its environs of his unflinching commitment to support them at all time. He also promised the women that he would continue to lobby  more support for the project, once he gets back to Spain.

In receiving the bed nets on behalf of his Village, the Alkalo, Mr. Faa Ceesay, thanked Global Unification and their friends from Spain for choosing Mandinaring for what he called a 'laudable initiative.' He said the bed nets would go a long way in minimizing malaria cases in his village. He assured them that the nets would be put into good use.

Other speakers at the presentation included Miss Fatoumatta Bah, National Treasurer, Global Unification-The Gambia, and Miss Noemi Fusker from Spain.
