Iago Vazques and Noemi Fuster, a Spanish couple who are currently in The Gambia as partners of Global Unification - The Gambia, have thrown their weight behind The Gambia's malaria control crusade.

Speaking to the Daily Observer during an exclusive interview, Mr Iago said that there were many ways of preventing malaria, but, he argued, the most effective way was the usage of mosquito nets. He recalled that malaria had been a common disease in Spain but that due to a massive campaign there, it had been eradicated completely. He said that its absence in Spain made some people to forget that the disease had ever existed. He said that their own knowlege about its effects which inspired them to form an association called 'Stop Malaria'.

As part of their campaign in The Gambia, the Spanish team are expected to provide some bednets for a few villages in Kombo East, precisely the villages of Mandinary and Pirang, "so as to help the people of those villages in the fight against the scourge of these illness".

According to Mr Vazques, they are poised to intensify their campaign to lobby for support back home in Spain in order to boost their malaria campaign in The Gambia in collaboration with their Gambian counterparts, Global Unification - The Gambia.

According to Noemi Fuster, during their stay in The Gambia, they also intend to visit key institutions crucial in the global fight against malaria, such as the Medical Research Council in Fajara (MRC).
