Marijuana smoker confesses

Amadou Touray, who was charged for the offences of criminal trespass and wilful damage to the property of one J Jatta, has confessed that he does take the drug locally called Jamba. Mr Touray made this confession before Senior Magistrate Kumba Sillah on Monday.

According to the particulars of offence, Amadou Touray, on  31 August, 2008, at Sukuta, Kanifing Municipality Council, entered the compound of one J Jatta and committed trespass. On count two, the accused wilfully and unlawfully damaged 5 glass doors and 6 glass windows valued at D3,170.

When the magistrate asked him what prompted him to commit the offences, he answered that "it was Satan". The senior magistrate further asked if he takes drugs, to which the accused answered in the affirmative saying that that he smoked marijuana on the said day.

The accused person further confessed that he has been taking the drug for 1 year and 4 months. When asked how he gets this drug, he said "I go to the boys."

Magistrate Kumba Sillah Camera found the accused guilty as charged and sentenced him to a one-year imprisonment for count one, without the option of a fine. On count two, he was sentenced to one year and six months. He was also asked to pay D3,170 to the plaintiff, in default to serve 6 months imprisonment.
The senior magistrate ruled that the accused's  fellow drug users be arrested and charged accordingly.
