26 arrested in Kiang West land dispute

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 16, 2012

Police in Mansakonko Tuesday arrested 25 youths from Sankandi village and one Momodou Jobe of Njorro Jataba in connection to a land dispute between Njorro Jataba and Sankandi. The disputed land is situated between the two villages in the Kiang West District, Lower River Region (LRR).

According to LRR Police commissioner, Omar Jawo, the incident occurred when the 25 youths from Sankandi village went to the farm of one Momodou Jobe and started uprooting the fence, thereby causing tension. He said the youths and the man were all arrested and detained at the Mansakonko Police Station as investigation is ongoing.

Jawo confirmed that the youths will be charged for willful damage of property while Momodou Jobe will be charged for inciting violence, for the fact that he [Jobe] went to erect a fence on a disputed land. Commissioner Jawo added that this did not go well with the people of Sankandi and they also claimed ownership of the land and said they would do anything possible to make sure they get it back.
