3 arrested for illegal possession of fire armsThursday, April 23, 2009 Personnel of the Police Intervention Unit (PIU) in the North Bank Region recently arrested 3 men, illegally in possession of arms. These men are said to have been part of a band of alleged criminals who have been going around, threatening residents of the region. Two of them were identified as Malians with their Gambian accomplice. Police, who have recently intensified their operations in the region to stamp out the robbery and related criminal activities, are said to have fallen suspicious of the men being in possession of fire arms when they raided them, only to discover an unregistered, locally made pistol, axe, among other items. The duo are expected to appear at the Kerewan Magistrates Court, charged for possession of unregistered fire arms without authority, under Section 8 of the Arm and Ammunition Act, cap 10, vol. 7 laws of The Gambia. This is not the first time report of this nature is coming from the region. It could be recalled that in the same region, earlier in September last year, a robbery incident in that area resulted to the death of one robber, following a shoot out between the villagers and criminals. Confirming the story, police spokesperson, ASP Sulayman Secka, assured that the duo will be tried with immediate effect, urging the public to be vigilant and to report anybody suspected of possessing arms without authority. He reminded the general public of their obligation to support the community policing effort. Author: by Musa Ndow | Media Actions See Also |
