3 DIE IN POST-WRESTLING COMBAT IN SENEGAL

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, April 24, 2012
Three supporters died in Ziguinchor, Pikine and Charoye as famous Senegalese wrestler Oumar Sakho who goes by his wrestling name Balla Gaye 2 defeated Yakhya Diop also known as Yekini at the Stade Demba Diop in Dakar on Sunday.

According to reports, the three supporters passed away due to excitement and shock over the outcome of the combat. The long awaited combat lived up to its pre-match billing but the way Balla beat Yekini was so shocking for his supporters. It was also the first time in two decades that Yekini touched ground.

The two famous wrestlers walked into the arena after series of minor combats between other upcoming wrestlers. They spent about 30 minutes getting set for each other as they used different means and ways of Marabouts writings, and recitations as well as questionable action but this was all part of the usual Senegalese wrestling scenario. Balla was seen wearing a shirt and a calabash with inscription on it as he walked across the wrestling ground with a white chicken egg while Yekini also had lots of jujus on him.

When the real thing started, Yekini got the advantage first as he sent blows towards Balla who kept on struggling as he held a tight grip on his wrestling gear, Yekini however made an effort to grab Balla’s wrestling gear but didn’t succeed as he helplessly held nothing at all except Balla’s marabout strings. They then held each other then Yekini fell on his knees in a kneeling position as Balla drew from him while Yekini pulled at his ankle.

Yekini tried to use his feet and create a win immediately at this point Balla pulled his feet under him and fell him flat to the ground. Balla laid on Yekini for some seconds and then whispered in his ears “I told you I would win.

Balla shed tears of joy as he hugged his dad and walked towards the podium. He thanked God, his dad, marabouts, and fans in Senegal, Casamance, Gambia and Guinea Bissau for their support. “I did to him what he never expected,” he said.
