3 robbers sentenced to death in URRFriday, August 20, 2010 The Basse High Court presided over by a travelling judge, Justice Lamin Jobarteh on Thursday
19th August 2010 convicted and sentenced three men to death for armed robbery. The trio -Bangally Jallow, Samba Doro Bah and Sunkari Kanteh were found guilty on all the five count charges of robbery ranging from murder, conspiracy to cause death, robbery with actual bodily harm and intent to cause grievous harm. According to the particulars of offence, on count one, the three were said have caused the death of one Mamadou Jallow by shooting him in the village of Miseraba Mariama in Kantora District, Upper River Region (URR). Count two stated that the trio conspired among themselves and caused the death of one Mamadou Jallow at Miseraba Mariama ons 21st September 2004. Count three stated that the trio also used violence to rob one Sadibou Kah in the same place. Count four stated that the trio robbed one Sadibou Kah with D7, 000.00, while count five revealed that the trio also intended to do grievous harm to one Adama Njie. Meanwhile, when they were asked to enter their plea of mitigation, the three all denied doing anything wrong for mitigation. In his judgement, Justice Jobarteh noted that murder has now become rampant in the country. He stated that our contemporary society is now being completely polluted by offences of this kind instead of being free and secure. According to the judge, the government of The Gambia is investing a lot of resources to ensure that the life and property of individuals are protected. "Any person who feels he can frustrate all those efforts will be dealt with accordingly," he vowed, saying he can’t close his eyes to the loss of lives and properties, not to mention the grief it has caused to the families of the victims. He then sentenced the three accused persons accordingly. In a similar development, the same convicts are expected to appear again at the Basse High Court for another judgement relating to the murder of one Alhagie Banjally of Giddah village in Kantora District, URR.
