33 houses burn down in Jamali Babou village

Africa » Gambia
Wednesday, April 29, 2009
A serious fire outbreak, last Saturday, April 25, resulted in the destruction of over thirty-three houses in six compounds at Jamali Babou Village in Sami District, Central River Region North.

The incident happened during a difficult moment for the villagers when their only hand pump in the village had broken down and they were experiencing acute water shortage. The Alkalo of the village, Eliman Jeng, said the fire has destroyed everything in the six compounds, ranging from foodstuff and seeds, to clothes.  He commended all those who helped to put out the fire, particularly the military personnel at Lamin Koto post who used their vehicle to fetch water from the river, which is 4 kilometers away from the village.

Alhagie Ganyie Touray, the regional governor  expressed his sympathy with the victims.  He said the affected families are extended families and appealed for urgent assistance for the victims.
