6 Gambian boxers released, deportedMonday, September 07, 2009 The six Gambian boxers who were detained in Madrid by the Spanish authorities, while to transit to the world's biggest boxing competetion in Millan, are now released and deported back to The Gambia. At a press briefing held at the Independence Stadium, on Friday, the permanent secretary at the Department of State for youth and Sports, Mambanyik Njie, informed journalists that the six detainees have arrived in the country save. He stated that the National Sports Council (NSC) did not know why they were detained, for they have fulfilled all the necessary requirment in travelling to Millan for the competetion. He added that the six have demonstrated complete obedience during their period of detention, which made them proud. Njie made it clear that a representative was sent for the Spanish authorities to see as evidence, but it proved futile. He thanked the National Sports Council for their steadfastness. Mamudou Drammeh, tresurer Gambia Boxing Amateur Association (GBAA), who also led the delegation, while explaining the ordeal, described the detention as a deliberate one. According to him, their flight wasn't a direct one, but they don't deserve to be detained by the Spanish authorities as they have fulfield the travelling requirements to the said international competetion.
