A-week-old baby needs urgent help

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, June 18, 2009
The Jadama family are calling on samaritarians, philanthropists, NGOs as well as other individuals to come to their rescue by saving the life of their baby, who is currently suffering from a neural tube defect.

The disease is characterised by sac-like protrusions of the brain and the membranes that cover it through openings of the skull (encephalocele). According to a medical report obtained from the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH), the one-week-old baby has been born with a mass on the frontal aspect of her head and a CT scanning result reads that normal posterior fossa, ventricular system and a big hyperdense image of the same density of the brain tissue outside the cranium in the frontal area, at the middle line, has a big bone defect.

According to the report, the baby needs a neuron surgical operation to repair the defect and it is necessary for the baby to be referred abroad. Oumie Barry, one of the family said the parents of the baby are poor farmers from Noo-Kunda village in Badibou, adding that they cannot afford to pay for the operation of the baby.  Therefore, she said, the family needs support to go for overseas treatment. Anyone willing to help the baby can contact the parents on 7437132 or 9927952.
