AFPRC Hospital administrator outlines functions

Africa » Gambia
Thursday, August 12, 2010
The acting administrator at the AFPRC General Hospital in Farafenni in the North Bank Region, Babucarr Saine, has outlined some of the achievements registered by the hospital.

He said the hospital is part of government's health reform programme and that is built to provide accessibility and affordability of health care services to Gambians. He said these during an  interview with the Daily Observer at his office in the AFPRC General Hospital in Farafenni.  According to him, the hospital does not only receive patients from Lower River Region, North Bank Region and Central River Region, but also from  neighbouring villages in Senegal.

Saine added that they conduct surgery which he said has drastically reduced the referral cases to the Royal Victoria Teaching Hospital (RVTH) in Banjul. According to him, they received all kinds of referral cases from health centres; such as the Essau Health Centre, Soma Health Centre among others. The hospital, he added, comprises  many wards; such as the eye unit, surgical unit, accident and emergency ward and outpatient ward among others.

Commenting on the medical fees, he said, the fee for Gambians is D5 for elders and D1 for children and students, while there are different rates for non-Gambians. He described the fee as the cheapest in the world and therefore advised people to report to the hospital for early medical treatment. Some of their constraints he highlighted include lack of surgeon specialists, inadequate biometric equipment and trained nurses as well as  lack of enough subvention for the hospital among others. He finally thanked the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare for their support.
