Africell on the brink after Biko loss

Africa » Gambia
Friday, May 22, 2009
Africell were pushed further closer to relegation from the Gambia Football Association First Division League after striker Assan Jatta's four goal winner for Steve Biko at the Independence Stadium on Wednesday.

Africell came into this clash well aware that a defeat will add to their woes and their failure to gel into a team in first half almost summed up their season as they succumbed to a 4-2 defeat in the hands of their Bakau foes. The former SK Lierse striker, Jatta, smashed four goals, two emanating from a penalty kick, to ensure that the telecommunication boys' two second half goals only served as a consolation. With fellow strugglers Hawks beating Real de Banjul in Brikama on the same day to move up three points away from the red zone, Africell's hopes of avoiding the drop looks a uphill a task. Africell will take on the same Hawks in their penultimate league fixture on Saturday and Sang Ndong's boys who have a game in hand only need to avoid a high score defeat in order to maintain their premier tier status.

Meanwhile, Tallinding United have been effectively relegated from the first division after a 1-0 loss against Armed Forces in their week twenty one fixture on Thursday. The lone goal victory earned Armed Forces their first league title in six years after closest rivals Samger were beaten 2-0 by Brikama United who succeeded in retaining their premier tier status.
