Africell sink

Africell Football Club became the second team relegated from the Gambia Football Association First Division League this season after losing 1-0 to Hawks on Saturday at the Serekunda East mini-Stadium.

To maintain any realistic chance of staying up, the telecommunications boys knew they had to beat Hawks with a higher score line, and hope that Sang Ndong's side lost their final league match against eventual champions Armed Forces. But this was not be, as they were undone by skipper Alieu Jagne's 71st minute strike that sealed the win, which virtually guarantees Hawks remain in the top flight.

The Africell side, whose season was marred by  hiring and firing of coaches, appeared relegation certainties for much of the season, though a win and a draw in the middle of the season stirred hope that they could could avoid their second relegation in less than four years.

However, incessant failings cost them dear. A 4-0 defeat to old foes Steve Biko in the week twenty-one fixture, which coincided with Hawks' 1-0 win over Real de Banjul did not help their cause. The weekend defeat means they finished the season on 22 points, six adrift of safety. They will be joined at the second division next season by the Tallinding United side whose fate was decided last week.
