Afro-Manding CD launchedTuesday, December 01, 2009 Omar Mendy, a native of Nbankam village in Lower Niumi and lead vocalist in one of the traditional dance bands called “Nyaagon Band”, has released an eight-track album. The eight songs celebrate a series of events and activities in The Gambia and beyond, such as the famous July 22nd takeover, and the fight against corruption in The Gambia led by president Jammeh among other melodious songs. Chief among these 8 tracks is one called “Nyaang apeh Ou N’cham”,which in manjago language means human beings are worth much more than money. This song defends in strong terms the value of human life rather tthan money as perceived by many in this troubled generation of ours. The second track is called “Sunyaroke”, which condemns corruption in our midst. It urges people to desist from corruption and anything relating to dishonesty and cheating in this world. This track makes extensive reference to the giant strides made by President Jammeh since he assumed power in 1994. It focuses on weeding out corruption in The Gambia. The third track called “Jenetala” in Mandinka language speaks against bleaching by our beautiful African sisters and mothers. It emphasises the importance of the African way of life and the beauty of the black colour. Omar Mendy, in a recent chat with Arts and Culture, revealed that the CD was launched on the 7th of November at the Barra Garden Club in NBR. According to him, he entered the world of music at a very tender age and since then has been doing well as expected of him. “I am preparing to participate in the forthcoming musical Jamboree scheduled for December 2009, organised by the Gambia Radio and Television Services (GRTS) at the prestigious Senegambia Hotel in Kololi. I will be performing alongside other top Gambian and non-Gambian artists. I will do my best on the day in question”, Mr Mendy explained. Author: Sanna Jawara | Media Actions See Also |
