Age scandal hits Nigeria U-17 camp

Africa » Gambia
Tuesday, August 04, 2009
Uncertainty revolves round the Nigeria Under 17 team as the count down to the FIFA U-17 Championship which the country is hosting draws nearer.

Reports emanating from Ghana, where the team are currently camped, have it that at least eight players of the Golden Eaglets have been decamped from the  team after failing the MIR test, meant to determine the actual age of the players. Those dropped are Kabiru Borgo, Bala Said, Olaitan Gambari, Yakubu Azeez, Ariyo Olukola, Sadiq Saliu, Duben Awaziem and Orji Alu Moses.

After the screening out, the reports added, the team, which are set to head to Banjul for a warm-up match against Gambia Baby Scorpions, have now been reduced to 27. Nigeria Football Federation boss, Alhaji Sani Lulu Abdullahi, insists that he would love the country to defend the championship they won two years ago in Korea, albeit he would not want the country to be embarrassed. "We are committed to getting it right this time around. We would give the country the best, and that best would be appreciated by the whole world," the Kogi State born soccer administrator had earlier emphasised.

To this end, Ghana's SundayTribunesports has gathered that the technical crew of the team has already mapped out a plan 'B' programme on the ground. The crew are said to have been grooming another set of players along side the team A, which may likely be a new team to present for the World championship that the country would host in October this year.
